Gallery 11 exhibit to support wildlife
Author: Erin Kourkounis
Date: Jun 5, 2010

Gallery 11 on South Baylen Street will have its opening at 6 p.m. today with an art exhibit centered on nature. At the event, "The Wilderness Within" exhibit will feature the watercolor paintings of Paul Jackson. Jackson, 42, said each of his exhibited works includes some form of wildlife. The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico inspired Jackson to give his show an environmental theme. "The wildlife are innocent victims," he said. "They're voiceless, and they can't tell BP what they think, so I did it for them." Original works and reproductions will be for sale. All proceeds will go to wildlife rescue efforts along the Gulf Coast. "I was heartbroken when I saw this happen," said Jackson, who grew up on the Mississippi coast and now lives in Missouri. "I realized it could potentially destroy hundreds of thousands of species of animals that make their home in the Gulf Coast and nowhere else." Jackson's work will be on display in the gallery until July 1. Gallery 11 owner Evan Levin said after today's opening, the exhibit can be viewed by appointment.
